Now, a TISS course to teach us about the care of elderly

The course by Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Gerontology or study in elder care has been mooted considering the growing population of elderly people and also to highlight problems of senior citizens .......DIPTI SONAWALA

The Centre of Lifelong Learning at the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) has announced a one year part-time diploma course in Gerontology or study in elder care, the first such course in Mumbai.

While there are many organisations helping groups like streetchildren and women, TISS have realised that the elderly who are both physically and mentally retired from the mainstream and their problems are forgotten.

The course has been mooted considering the growing population of elderly people and also to highlight the problems of senior citizens.

Sabiha Vasi, the programme coordinator and a faculty member at TISS said, “Our objective in introducing a course in gerontology is to generate a trained cadre of functionaries for effective intervention based on a human rights’ perspective to enhance the quality of life of older adults and to inculcate a holistic understanding of the biological, social, political and economic issues involved in working with older adults.”

Krishnajyoti Sahani, general secretary, Family Welfare Agency, an NGO which is working on senior citizens and mental health, said, “For all these years, geriatrics was not considered to be a problem. But now the growth rate of the elderly population is increasing rapidly. And thus this elderly population need extra care. That is why it has become significant to introduce a subject of Gerontology or Geriatrics.”

The elderly demand that society should just not ensure independence and participation, but also provide care, fulfillment and dignity and by premising itself upon the optimistic developments in the fields of geriatrics and gerontology and offering ‘structural opportunities’ so that they can exercise the choice that persons can live with dignity even as they grow old.

The course will begin in June this year.
