YEAR 2007-08

The most important aspect of LIGHT’s work during 2007-08 has been the emphatic assertion that it is not an instrument of tokenism but an entity whose stated mission is actioned through coherent and integrated strategies. This is reflected across the range of activities carried out in seven sectors namely Education – Health – Livelihoods – Environment - Neighbourhood Community Development - Relief & Rehabilitation, and - Sports & Culture.

Education:

·                     In the reporting period an amount of Rs. 17, 39,010/- has been distributed to 223 students covering five states.

·                     British Council conducted a Situational Analysis on current levels of student’s English Language at the under-graduate and graduate level in three colleges at Vijayawada of Andhra Pradesh. The council recommended a context based language improvement, especially on areas relevant to potential careers.

Health
LIGHT has accorded due importance to the health sector in its ambit of activities.

·                     96 villages have been provided with 153 bore wells this year enabling them to have access to safe drinking water.

·                     6 Cancer awareness and screening camps have been organized in association with Indo-American Cancer Institute and Research Centre.

·                     4 mega health camps have been organized in association with District Medial and Health departments.

·                     Through these efforts LIGHT could reach out to number of villages in Krishna and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh.

Livelihoods:
As one of the forerunners in the Livelihood sector, LIGHT recognises various opportunities in the employability sector for youth.

·                     LIGHT initiated training of school and college drop outs in employability skills. This activity has been taken up in partnership with a French NGO Aide-et-Action and the National Academy of Construction.

·                     During the year 633 were trained in the employable skills such as automobile mechanics, Information Technology Enabled Services, Customer relations and sales, Bedside patient care, hospitality, loom based weaving and embroidery.

·                     A second significant activity was the training of male school dropouts in construction related trades namely form work carpentry, bar bending and masonry. A total of 50 students underwent the training for 3 months. Of these 40 trainees have been gainfully employed.

·                     34 women and children took part in the two month course in computers held at Vijayawada.

·                     Replicas of four Kondapalli Toy sets, namely, Ambari (Elephant with riders) Palanquin bearers, Toddy tree with tappers and bullock cart with cart riders were installed at Ibrahimpatnam, close to Vijayawada.

·                     Artisans have also been supported to set up stalls and exhibit their products. This was done during a national level workshop on SHGs.

Site level Community Development:

·         An amount of Rs. 75 lakhs was routed through LIGHT for local area development activities in Himachal Pradesh.

Environment Sector:
Efforts were made to develop and inculcate among the Kondapalli artisans, the use of vegetable colours and dyes for the colouring of the toys. These became viable alternatives to the use of synthetic and chemical based colours which contribute to environmental degradation.
