MRPL has also developed a Green Belt around the entire Refinery with plant species specially selected to blend with the local flora. Environment Care Committed To Environment In Every Aspect Of Refining 1. Measures are taken for the protection of the environment from the design stage. 2. The process Units are heat integrated to the possible extent to achieve higher overall thermal efficiency of the Refinery, thereby reducing fuel oil or fuel gas consumption and emissions. 3. Continuous monitoring of SOx and NOx analyzers in stacks 4. Low Sulphur fuel oil is used in furnaces (less than 1 percent) 5. Amine Treating Unit scrubs hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from Fuel Gas. The Sour Water Stripper Unit strips the hydrogen sulphide off the process waste water. 6. Highly efficient Sulphur Recovery Unit (99 percent Recovery) licensed by M/s KTI, 7. Advanced technology for treating Refinery waste water has been adopted. The waste water treatment plant that has been installed treats Refinery waste water containing Sulphide, phenol, ammonia, oil etc., and thus meeting the limits of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB). The treatment consists of physical separation, chemical and biological treatment and final filtration with polishing. The treated waste water is discharged into the sea at a distance of 650 M. and at a depth of 6.5 M. The discharge point was selected by the National Institute of Oceanography after carrying out a detailed study on the effect of this stream on marine life. The quality of the treated waste water and marine environment around the discharge point is monitored by an independent agency all round the year. 70% of the treated effluent is recycled back and used in the Refinery for cooling towers. In actual practice, the treated waste water quality surpasses the KSPCB standards. MRPL has stringent internal targets compared to MINAS/KSPCB. MRPL has developed and implemented a process for treating the effluent with Hydrogen Peroxide, which reduces the sludge formation. There is constant monitoring of the quality of the treated waste water and air emissions. MRPL is a certified ISO 14001 and possess excellence in environmental performance. Think Green · Green Belt MRPL has also developed a Green Belt around the entire Refinery. The Green Belt consists of plant species that have been specially selected to blend with the local flora. Some of the species are expected to act as bio-indicators. A comprehensive programme has been launched by MRPL for developing a greenbelt around the Refinery. · Necessity Of The main objective of setting up a green belt is to mitigate fugitive emissions or accidental releases, control soil erosion, to facilitate waste water utilization, control noise pollution and to improve the aesthetic view of the Refinery. As per environmental requirements, at present more than 300 acres (inclusive of 100 acres of natural vegetation) of area are covered under green belt. Selection of plant species was done by assessing their adaptability to local conditions and by NEERI’s recommendations. The plant species are required to have the following attributes: · Fast growing large evergreen canopy cover, large leaf index and resistance to pollutants. · Adaptable to Agro-geo climatic conditions to preserve the ecological balance of the region. · Species like mango and shisum to be included as potential bio indicators of pollution. More than 50 varieties of plants, which are locally adaptable, have been planted in the green belt. Acasia, Bauhinia, Cashew, Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Glyricidia, Gulmohar, Hopia, Jackfruit, Mahagoni,Mango, Peltophorum, Rain tree, Soapnut, Spathodia, Tamarindus, Teak, Vetiria are a few varieties seen in the belt. Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives · As a socially responsive organisation, your Company is committed to the well being of the communities around the refinery area. · As an endeavour to empower women, the company took lead in organizing a skill development programme for women from surrounding villages who were trained in tailoring & stitch craft. As a measure of goodwill to the project- displaced families, the company is also providing a overhead water tank to ease the drinking water problem of the rehabilitation colony. The internal roads of this colony are being asphalted. · Your company has donated one laser and one dialysis machine to · Your Company has taken an initiative to develop a beautiful · The total amount spent during the year on CSR initiatives amounted to Rs.151.16 lakhs as compared to Rs.40.92 lakhs during the previous year. · Your Company has committed to take part in the establishment of a Children's Paediatric ward, with all modern diagnostic instruments and facilities in Source: http://www.mrpl.co.in/aboutus_user.php?menu=Profile&mn_name=Corporate%20Overview&mn_no=1 (Profile) http://www.mrpl.co.in/environment_user.php?menu=Environment%20Care&mn_no=4 (Environment Care) http://www.mrpl.co.in/think_cause.php?mn_no=12 (Think Green) http://www.mrpl.co.in/downloads/MRPL%20-%20Annual%20Report_2007-08.pdf (Pg. 4, Annual Report 2007-08) Contact Information: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd.
