An aptitude for science, and an inclination towards being organised and detail-oriented are important requirements ........- Jayanti Ghose

Medicine is one of the most distinguished professions in the world. Doctors handle a large number of responsibilities and duties, but their main function is to help their patients attain and maintain good health.

Students can specialise in the many branches of medicine during postgraduation. A doctor’s responsibilities depend entirely on his/ her speciality. However, all doctors examine patients to determine what their problems are. Hours of work are usually long, and the work may be stressful.

Skills/ traits

Being compassionate and caring goes hand in hand with the ambition of becoming a doctor. You should have stamina, emotional stability, good communication skills and be able to work under stress and pressure. An aptitude for science, and an inclination towards being organised and detail-oriented are important requirements.

Education and training

Medical education and training begins after plus two/ class 12/ equivalent, with physics, chemistry, biology and English. An entrance exam that tests one’s academic ability and concepts in physics, chemistry and biology is generally the selection procedure for MBBS courses. States conduct their own entrance exams for students
domiciled in the state.

Nationallevel, pre-medical entrance tests are open to students from all states.

The all-India, pre-medical/ predental entrance exam by CBSE (www.cbse.nic.in) comprises a prelim exam in April and a final exam in May for admission to 15 per cent of the total seats for MBBS/ BDS courses in all medical/ dental colleges run by the Union of India, State Governments, Municipal or other local authorities in India, except in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Other medical-related courses would include homoeopathy (BHMS), ayurveda (BAMS), unani (BUMS), dentistry (BDS), physiotherapy (BPT), occupational therapy (BOT), audiology and speech therapy, nursing, prosthetics and orthotics and optometry.

Placements/ prospects

Doctors find jobs in government and private hospitals, nursing homes, and other health facilities. Private and public sector organisations also employ doctors. The Combined Medical Services Examination conducted by UPSC (www.upsc.gov.in) offers entry to central government departments/ posts. The armed forces also recruit doctors. The compensations of a career in medicine are money (especially in a consulting practice) but establishing oneself takes long years of study and dedication, so it is not for the faint-hearted.
