ECIL to develop disaster communication system for BMC

The ECIL will develop a communication network linking all the disaster related authorities — BMC, 24 ward offices, police and fire brigade — to tackle any kind of disaster in the city.

The decision regarding the same was taken in group leaders’ meeting on Tuesday after ECIL- a central government enterprise, gave a presentation. BJP leader Bhalchandra Shirsat said the BMC needed advanced communication system during disasters like floods, fire and bomb blasts. “The ECIL will develop the communication system in which citizens in distress can call a fixed number and all the responsible authorities will be informed through it. Also, the details of the disaster spot will be received by the officials on their cell phone through the system,” said an official.

The BMC had earlier asked its e-governance consultant, Tata Consultancy Services, to device a disaster communication system. It had recommended wireless facility of Tetra which can be used by the ward offices and the disaster management cell. However, the plan was not sanctioned.
