Bridging the divide
Authorities plan to set up facilitation centres for the betterment of the socio-economic sector ....swati soni

Around 60% of Mumbai’s population resides in the slums, which are characterised by unhygienic and poor conditions of urban civic services. To provide maximum benefits to this socio-economic group, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has initiated many facilities and one of the prime services being the setting up of facilitation centres called ‘Adhar Kendras’.

These facilitation centres will be set up across the city and will act as a bridge between the trained and unemployed youth. The Adhar Kendras will serve various purposes such as the employment of such youth. It will also act as a platform for the display and sale of the products by the beneficiaries under various property alleviation programmes. These centres will also be the one point for municipal services like payment of tax, issuing of birth and death certificates.

To elaborate more on this project, joint commissioner V Radha, explains, “The MCGM   will provide the infrastructure for the centres which will comprise of land, machinery, building and furniture. The selected agencies on behalf of the corporation will run the centres for a term of three years.”

Another area of involvement will be in providing Information Technology (IT) initiatives. “The MCGM wants to ensure that maximum number of citizens use the internet-based services. Especially, those people who are computer illiterate or cannot access the internet. In order to cut this digital divide, we will provide cyber facilities at these centres,” adds Radha.

As of now, the expression of interest has been put forward and then tenders will be floated to select agencies and the project will be operational by the end of this year.

“This is one of the biggest milestones in the history of the MCGM and will expedite the process and save valuable time of our citizens. Simultaneously, the listed facilities will change the lives of many for the better,” says NCP corporator Vidya Chauhan.
