Civic body goes hi-tech

Biometric system will record employee attendance........Naresh Kamath

THE CENTURY old Brihanmumbai Munici pal Corporation (BMC) has decided to go techno savvy in keeping track of the attendance of its employees.
Perturbed with late arrivals and proxy attendance, the civic body will now install Biometric Access Control System (BACS) to scientifically record the daily attendance of its employees.
Here, every employee would be given a Smart Card that would contain his or her employment details. The card would also have impressions of two fingers of the employee. An entry (attendance) would be recorded only when the card is inserted in a Biometric Card reader and two fingers are held in front of it.

"There would be no room for any proxy as no one would be able to record their at- tendance unless the person himself is pres ent. This is turn would ensure an increase in productivity," said Manu Kumar Srivastava, Additional Municipal Commissioner.
Three thousand such machines would be installed within a year in all civic establishments, including the civic headquarters, ward offices, civic hospitals, schools and municipal outposts.
The entire network would be inter-connected and employees can even record attendance in other areas if they are out for official work.
Currently the BMC has about one lakh employees on their rolls and the project would be implemented in three phases.
The first phase would cover the municipal headquarters, the second will cover ward offices and hospitals and the third will cover the remaining areas.
The project implemented by Bharat Electronics Limited has cost the civic body Rs 7.50 crore.
THE SYSTEM: Every employee will be given a smart card containing his or her personal details and impressions of two fingers.  To record attendance, the card would have to be inserted into a Biometric reader.
