BMC to showcase its infrastructure projects

projects on which the Brihanmumbai Mu nicipal Corporation (BMC) will throw
some light during the India Urban Space 2007-world expo and conferences on
infrastructure projects for cities.

The richest and the largest municipal corporation in the country will put up
its stall at the expo starting from September 27 to give the glimpse of its
projects to other municipal corporations and the state government.
The three-day expo will witness top government officials, academicians,
architects, builders and other stakeholders gathered to catalyse the changes
in urban India.

The BMC has been invited by the Ministry of Urban Development to participate
in the expo and showcase its current infrastructure projects which are
funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN NURM)
and also its future projects by displaying posters, providing booklets and
touch screen kiosks.

According to Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Special Engineer) R R Hariname,
who is in charge of the exhibition, the BMC needs some exposure for its
projects. "The BMC has a number of high-funded mega projects and has
undertaken a lot of infrastructure projects and upgradations. However,
people have very little information about it. This will be a good platform
for us to make people aware of the work done by BMC," he said.
The exhibition to be held at Bombay Exhibition Center, NSC grounds from
September 27 to September 30, will also have a stall by the BMC on issues
like water supply, sanitation/ sewerage (MSDP), slum sanitation, storm water
drains, urban transport beautification, roads, information technology,
e-governance and health.

Hariname added that projects like construction of Middle Vaitarna dam,
Brimstowad, Mumbai Sewerage Disposal Project (MSDP), underground tunnels,
micro tunneling and other projects under the JNNURM, e-governance initiative
including the citizen's portal will be exhibited at the upcoming expo.
The BMC will be preparing brochures, hand-books and video-clips to provide
information to visitors and officials on its projects. "We also expect
technical guidance from officials of other states and are looking forward to
some new technology that can be adopted," said Hariname.

The civic administration which runs three tertiary hospitals, four medical
colleges and 19 peripheral hospitals along with maternity homes and health
posts at the annual estimated budget of Rs 1,300 crore, has major makeover
plans for its hospitals in the coming years.

"There are projects like KEM Hospital's proposed makeover, Sion Hospital's
mortuary centre which is under construction with multi-organ transplant
centre and the Nair Hospital OPD building which is to be constructed," said
Dr S G Damle, joint municipal commissioner (medical education and health).
