From: <medha@narmada.org> To: <narmadaandolan@lists.riseup.net> Sent: Thursday, October 02, 2008 8:09 PM Subject: [narmada_andolan] MOST URGENT APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO REACH BIHAR KOSHI NAV NIRMAN ABHIYAN URGENT APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO REACH BIHAR MORE DOCTORS & PARA – MEDICS NEEDED IN AFFECTED AREAS Dear Friends, Through our regular updates, we have repeatedly been appealing to all of you to identify and inform us of VOLUNTEERS AND MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS' who are keen to assist with the relief activities in the Kosi calamity affected areas of Bihar. We are constantly reminding you of this, as even today is a DESPERATE AND URGENT NEED FOR MORE and more of them at various camps all over. To this day, there are lots of villages where the Government relief has simply not reached and thousands are lying unattended, be in the Kumarkhand block and Murliganj area in Madhepura district or in the camps at Raghopur and Pratapganjat Supaul district or the Ramnagar camp in Purnia District, with an inmate capacity of about 4500, where minimal Government services are just beginning to reach. At places like Ramnagar, we are both mounting pressure on the Govt.as well as trying to reach out with support from our side, considering the urgency of the requirements. In different districts, Kosi Chunauti, Kosi Nav Nirman Abhiyan, including NAPM, NBA, Asha Parivar, Sathi-Cehat, Shilip Kendra, IMA etc. and Manav Seva Sanstha are constantly engaging with the Govt.Hospital Civil Surgeon and the District Magistrate and administration. Volunteers and medical support workers are needed immediately to: ? Assist with the mobile clinics and medical aid work at the camps ? Assist with data collection and concrete survey of families in the camps as well as on the canals. ? Help identify and relink missing persons and property ? Assist with a few educational activities for the children and inmates at the camps ? Provide support to the information centre that we, along with Swati from Parivartan and others are in the process of establishing, for providing varied information to people. ? Help with relief distribution and mobilizing resources ? Helping with regular errands like making purchases, documenting activities etc. Our team of relief workers also celebrated Id along with the inmates at the Islampur camp, located at Banmanki where the people affected in Madhepura are staying. Activists of Asha Parivar / NAPM are working at Bihariganj where the Government had claimed on its website that a camp was fully functional, whereas in reality, the Govt. camp simply did not exist! Kosi Nav Nirman Abhiyan and other groups are also planning to being an informal training process for para-medics and other volunteers, in the Purnia district from the 5th of October. including supporting anganwadi and mobile clinic activities.
