Mayor accepts demand to set up intervention centres for autistic kids
Mumbai: It was the best gift autistic children could have asked for on World Autism Awareness Day. After their parents met mayor Shubha Raul on Wednesday, they were thrilled that she accepted their charter of demands and gave a nod to their request of setting up intervention centres for them.
To address their grievances, members of the Forum of Autism met governor S K Jameer and Raul and presented them their charter that demanded attention for several matters concerning the children. It is important to increase awareness about autism. It is sad that autism is not even recognised in the Persons With Disability Act, said Chitra Iyer, whose nineyear-old son Shravan is diagnosed with autism. In addition, appropriate education will help a child with autism lead a productive life in society, she added. Recognising these problems, Raul accepted to schedule a meeting with BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak on April 5. We will identify three BMC schools, one each in eastern suburbs, western suburbs and city where we can set up these centres, said Iyer. TNN
