Police inspectors held for accepting bribe
N M Joshi Marg policemen accepted Rs 20,000

Mumbai, November 22: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Police Inspector Prashant Pandit of N M Joshi Marg for accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from Ravi Kumar Gawiappa (32), a businessman. Gawiapa alleged that Pandit and Assistant Police Inspector Jagdish Giri had promised to clear his name from a cheating case that was registered against him, for a sum of Rs 50,000. Giri has also been arrested.

According to Gawiappa, on November 3, while he was in police custody, the policemen took him to an isolated UTI Bank ATM in Mahim and forced him to withdraw Rs 25,000. Though the accused was granted bail on November 10, they demanded he pay them the remaining Rs 25,000 or be arrested again. Ravi agreed to pay them Rs 20,000 on Wednesday and after consulting his lawyer, met the ACB. The ACB officials laid a trap and caught Pandit red-handed.

Gawiappa, who is from Tamil Nadu, was brought to Mumbai on October 30, on charges of defamation and cheating. “I was tortured in police custody. I was allowed to eat only one meal a day. They took me in a taxi to the ATM at Mahim because there was no camera there. They even forged my signature on some documents.”

When contacted, Mangesh Sawant, PRO at ACB said, “The operation to arrest Pandit was conducted following the information given by Gawiappa. The two have been arrested and will be produced in court tomorrow. Further investigations in the case are on.”
