Introduction : Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai, called PAWS-Mumbai for short, it is an independently registered, non – profit animals welfare and environment protection group, founded by Sunish Subramanian when he was 20, PAWS-Mumbai attempts to live up to the maxim, "together we can & we will make a difference" by listening with like minded friend in the city of Mumbai.

 

Initially, PAWS-Mumbai started as a first aid and wildlife rescue group. Later, in 2002 on May 14 to be precise, Sunish called on other senior hardcore activist to band under the banner of PAWS-Mumbai, finally on 9 th September 2002, PAWS-Mumbai was registered with the Charity Commissioner of Mumbai, today PAWS-Mumbai is one of the first animal welfare group in Mumbai to be run by a group of dedicated, young animal lovers and is growing into major movement in the city.

 

In July 2005, PAWS-Mumbai received its first ambulance to help city animals in distress to run & manage from M/s.Shilodaya Investment and Finance Pvt. Ltd., in the memory of Late Smt. Satya Sharma, only on the basis of the hard and genuine work that the members of the organization are putting in. This ambulance covers a wide area of the Mumbai city and is the unique one for the slum.

 

Recently PAWS-Mumbai founder's and there work featured in LIMCA BOOK OF RECORD IN 2005 as "Youngest animal rehabilitation team".

 

History : PAWS-Mumbai was established in May 2002 with seven founder trustees. PAWS-Mumbai is registered under :

Area of Jurisdiction : As per our "Memorandum of Association" and "Rules and Regulation" our area of jurisdiction is Mumbai but since we do, on occasion, receive calls from near by areas like Thane & Navi Mumbai, we also venture into these area to help at times.

 

Activities Undertaken …………

 

Ambulance Cum Mobile Clinic Service : PAWS-Mumbai responds to public call to help sick, injured accident stray animals. This ambulance caters both small & medium animals. PAWS-Mumbai ambulance cover calls from 3 municipal limit like Mumbai, Navi Mumbai & Thane city.

 

Sterilization & Vaccination : PAWS-Mumbai started sterilization with the help of Mumbai's hospitals since its starting. PAWS-Mumbai catches stray dogs & cats from different areas and get them sterilized at Mumbai's hospitals, then they release from they are pick – up. PAWS-Mumbai also vaccinate against rabies to all the animals, which are sterilized.

First Aid & Camps : PAWS-Mumbai volunteers & trustees personally go on roads to treat all types of injured animals. Almost every night, after 10 in the evening and after the day work, they roam on the bike to treat maggot wound animals, some cases are referred back to the local vets the next day. They remove maggots from wound and treat animals. PAWS-Mumbai also arranges different first aid camps for all types of animals and also hold lectures to teach first aid and how to help an animal in distress to the college & school student.

 

Helping Cattle's In Distress : PAWS-Mumbai hold regular camps in slum & around railway track areas for vaccination for bullocks, donkeys which are employed for work, also hold first aid & medical check–up camps. Members regularly care for and rehabilitate disowned cattle – a major problem in the city at Panjropoles (Cattle Shelters), after treating them at Bombay SPCA, treatment is done at any time of the day or night (if possible).

 

Adoption & Rehoming : Innumerable homeless and animals have been re-homed through our adoption scheme. Adoption is done after strict interviews.

 

Humane Education : With the help of mediums like video screening, live talks and interaction, the society tries to create awareness about animals welfare and inform the public about animals laws and issues related to it. PAWS-Mumbai strongly feels that humane education is essential if the condition of animals has to improve.

 

Illegal Slaughter House Movement : Honorary Animal Welfare Officer's of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the PAWS-Mumbai team team member collect information about illegal slaughter and lodge complaints with the BMC. Member also rescue goats and assist in seizing illegal meat from such slaughter house.

 

Legal Issues & Cruelty Cases : Member of the PAWS-Mumbai and Honorary Animal Welfare Officers also investigate cruelty cases, which include rescue calls. PAWS-Mumbai also initiates action against people inflicting cruelty on animals and inspect circuses and zoos. Inspection reports are thereafter sending to the respective authorities to further investigation.

 

Helping & Co-Ordination With Other Like Minded NGO's : PAWS-Mumbai aims at helping and co-ordination activities with other like minded NGO's that it can reach out to more animals. At PAWS-Mumbai, we sincerely feel that the animal welfare movement should grow and in keeping with our mission, "together we can & we will make a difference" will happed only when co-ordinates with other like minded NGO's.

 

Tree Plantation & Illegal Tree Cutting Issue : PAWS-Mumbai also undertake tree plantation drives and take up cudgels on the behalf those who oppose tree cutting. For example, if someone complains about illegal tree cutting in their neighborhood, we follow up the complaint with an investigation and also inform the local Police and BMC authority about the misdemeanor.

 

Achievements :

·          Shut downing illegal wild bird selling shops in Bhandup, Mulund, Vikhorli area.

·          Shot downing illegal slaughter houses in Bhandup, Mulund area.

·          Shot downing illegal animal shelters (mini zoo) in municipal garden, which is adopted by local MLA and BMC department too.

·          Movement to save wild snake in the metropolitan city like Mumbai.

·          Stopping snake charming & parrot astrology in Mumbai.

·          Joint movement to stop illegal abandoning of stray dogs by NMMC.

·          Successfully involvement of young people in the PAWS – Mumbai movement.

·          Hosted & Campaigned against illegal cutting of trees on LBS Marg with other environmental NGO's, where noted environmentalist Shri. Sundarlal Bahuguna was present.
