1. FROM THE DESK OF HONY. GEN. SECRETARY:

Dear All,

Our dedicated volunteers Shiv Prasad and Kunal attended a rescue call in
which a mother and baby donkey, injured on the roads were rescued. On
their return our ambulance met with an accident but luckily no one was
hurt. However, this has burdened us with an additional expense of
Rs.12,000 which will definitely stall the progress of our work in the
coming weeks.

I  request you for funds so that you can  help us help the animals better!

Regards,
Nilesh Bhanage

2. SOME NOTABLE FIELD CALLS:

# PAWS volunteer Shiv-Prasad saw  a horse with a deep wound on the neck
pulling a cart. The cruel owner had tried to cover the wound with a cloth.
PAWS team swung into action & stopped the cart. Our 'Best Volunteer'
Shiv-Prasad called PAWS vet Dr. Datta for the treatment of the Horse.
Sadly the wound is getting infected due to the heavy carrier on his neck.
Vet Dr. Datta gave the treatment to the Horse & kept following up for a
week for treatment.

# PAWS received a call to help  stray dog with maggot affected wounds
from Rosalie, who  stays in Roha in Konkan Region & runs a shelter for
cows. Although this was over 140 Kms. from our place, the Paws team went
to pick up the dog and  admitted it to the THANE SPCA and when it had
recovered fully, drove back to release it and also visited Rosalie's cow
shelter there.

# PAWS office was alerted about a snake charmer near Khidkali Shiv-Temple by
Kishore. The Paws team swung into action and rescued a live and healthy
cobra from the Charmer. Later the Cobra was treated and released by
volunteer Vishal in new Bombay.

# PAWS volunteer Shiv-Prasad noticed that a  15 day old baby monkey was
left tied to an auto rickshaw and was crying for help.It was rescued by
Vishal, Prasad & Kunal & Vishal's mother - Ms. Vijaya Kantharia (PAWS
Member) gave  food & care to the baby. Next day the baby  was shifted to
Bombay SPCA animal hospital for rehabilitation. The poor monkey  refused
to let go off  Vishal's mother assuming her to be his mum too!

# PAWS Trustee Neeta Parwatey rescued 6 Rose Ring Parakeets from a
bird seller in Panvel City on 21st September 2006. The bird's wings were
clipped so that they  could not fly. They were also sick. Three parakeets
died after rescue- the remaining three were later shifted to Thane SPCA
for rehabilitation & treatment.

8. VEGAN RECEIPE:

Recipe: Indonesian Watercress Soup

Start your autumn with this deliciously exotic Indonesian Watercress
soup. Not to be confused with water chestnuts, this leafy aquatic plant is
of the cruciferous family, which also includes cabbage, cauliflower,
broccoli, and collard greens. It contains more iron than spinach and
more calcium than milk! Watercress is rich in vitamins A, C and E and
contains significant amounts of folic acid. This recipe can be enjoyed hot
or cold, as a starter or as a light meal!

Ingredients:
10 oz. watercress

1 Tbs. crunchy peanut butter

2 Tbs. oil

2 cups vegetable stock, cube

2 cups water

2 tsp. of turmeric

pinch of nutmeg, optional

1 Tbs. soy sauce

1 large chunk ginger

Directions:

Mix salt, pepper, nutmeg and turmeric in a bowl with enough soy sauce
to make a paste. Heat oil in a sauce pan, add ginger and fry for a few
seconds; add peanut butter. Stir rapidly (peanut butter will stick to
the bottom of the pan); after 30 seconds add vegetable stock and stir
frequently. Take a ladle full of the stock and add to the turmeric
past; stir the paste into the liquid in the bowl. Add the rest of the soy
and the turmeric mixture to the pan and stir.
