HYDERABAD: An unemployed youngster who posed as an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) inspector and tried to extort money from the promoter of a granite company was trapped by the city police.
The accused, 19-year-old B Sai Rahul alias Rahul alias Aravind, is a native of Ongole. He worked as an office boy in the ICICI Insurance office and later as a DTP operator. Having rendered jobless and incurred heavy debts, he decided to make easy money.
Rahul came to know about the operations of ACB through newspapers and electronic media and decided to cash in on the fear of ACB among government officials as well as private firms.
He collected the phone number of the chairman and managing director of Anand Granite Exports Private Limited at Ongole in Prakasam district.
“Rahul introduced himself as an ACB inspector, Aravind, and asked him to submit income details of the company to finalise a report by the bureau higher-ups. To avoid further enquiry, he demanded Rs 3 lakh,” Task Force DCP VB Kamalasan Reddy said.
The CMD of the company had asked his chartered accountant, K Srinivasulu Reddy, to settle the issue. The CA in turn contacted `Aravind’ and a meeting was fixed at a hotel in the Banjara Hills for Tuesday.
Srinivasulu Reddy, along with his accountant M Rama Rao, came to the city and met Aravind but they grew suspicious over his identity during the conversation and deferred settlement of the issue.
They later complained about the matter to the police.
On Wednesday, the `inspector’ agreed to settle the issue for Rs 50,000 and asked the CA to come to Ameerpet. Task Force sleuths laid a trap and nabbed the fake ACB inspector when he came to take the amount.
