ACB to return trap money immediately

Mumbai: In a move to encourage citizens to come forward with complaints of corruption, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday said it will make sufficient allocation in the budget so that complainants are returned the money used in a trap immediately.

Currently, the complainant in a corruption case is asked to pay the money which is given as the bribe amount in a trap. The money is later released by the special court, but this can take more than an year.

“We will make sufficient provisions in our next budget and allocate money to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) so that the money of the complainants is not stuck,’’ deputy chief minister R R Patil said at the launch of the vigilance awareness week.

Patil, who also handles the Home portfolio, said the complainants will get the money as soon as the trap is over and then the ACB can get it from the trial court. Patil also claimed that a single vote was selling for Rs 5,000 in polls to a municipal corporation held recently. TNN
