Inspector gets 3 years' jail for bribe

Mumbai: In a rare case, a police inspector has been sent to 3 years in jail
for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

    Kishore Kumar Tiwari, 52, posted at the Oshiwara police station, was
sentenced by a special sessions court on Tuesday in a 1999 case lodged by a
woman named Ritu Bhatia.

    Bhatia had loaned Rs 5 lakh to her relative, who refused to repay the
amount. She also began to get threatening calls from a gangster. She then
approached Tiwari, who asked for a bribe of Rs 10,000 to help her. ACB

Had Sought A Bribe Of Rs 10,000 From Complainant To Settle Dispute

Mumbai: A special sessions court on Tuesday sentenced a police inspector to
three years in jail for accepting Rs 10,000 in bribe. The accused-Kishore
Kumar Tiwari-was posted at Oshiwara police station when he was arrested by
the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Mumbai police in 1999.
   The ACB acted against 52-yearold Tiwari after it received a complaint
from Ritu Bhatia. According to her, she had given Rs 5 lakh as loan to her
relative, Chandra Bhatia, who refused to repay the amount. She said that she
received threatening calls from a man who identified himself as 'Khan' and
claimed to belong to the Iqbal Mirchi gang. She added that Khan would call
and tell her to stop asking for her money back.
   In her complaint, Bhatia said that when she went to Oshiwara police
station, Tiwari asked for Rs 10,000 as bribe to settle the dispute between
her and Chandra. Tiwari also demanded that she give him half of the amount
he would help her recover from Chandra.
   ACB officials laid a trap for Tiwari and he was caught red-handed within
the compound of the Oshiwara police station itself while taking the bribe
amount from Bhatia on April 28, 1999. He was arrested and subsequently
released on bail.
   When the matter came up for trial, the prosecution examined Bhatia and
the witnesses to the raid to build up its case before judge R R Gandhi.
Public prosecutor Lata Chheda pleaded that Tiwari be sent to jail for five
years given the seriousness of his offence. However, after examining all the
evidence, the court held that Tiwari be imprisoned for three years.
   Tiwari, who is attached to the local arms division of Mumbai police and
has a degree in law, was placed under suspension after the case was filed
against him. He was not sent to jail on Wednesday since the conviction
against him was only for three years which meant that the trial court
release him on bail, giving him time to appeal the sentence in the Bombay
high court.
